JMcL Chats: Meet Jessica Schumacher of Nine Fair Backgammon
Every December, we’re on the hunt for that one totally unique, showstopping gift. This year, we found Nine Fair Backgammon.
Founded by artist Jessica Schumacher, Nine Fair creates one-of-a-kind backgammon boards handcrafted in Pennsylvania, and then hand-painted by Jessica in ready-to-ship or fully customized designs. Below, we chat with Jessica on the inspiration behind her brand and what she’s wearing this holiday season.
Plus, go to our Instagram to enter our giveaway with Nine Fair Backgammon. The winner will receive a J.McLaughlin cashmere style and a hand-painted backgammon board customized with their monogram. Ends 12/9.
How did you first become interested in backgammon?
Intense games at home, driven largely by my determination to outplay my father, a formidable backgammon competitor.
What inspired you to start Nine Fair Backgammon?
My inspiration to start my business began during a trip to the Bahamas. At The Dunmore, I came across a backgammon table that captivated me. I wanted to have it replicated for myself, so I reached out to the artist who originally created it. When he declined to make another, I decided to craft my own. That simple act of creating something I loved became the foundation for what eventually turned into my business.
Is there an especially memorable or favorite piece you’ve created?
While I truly enjoy crafting sets as wedding gifts, I am most deeply moved by creating gifts for those celebrating significant milestone birthdays later in life.
What are a few of your favorite holiday traditions?
For me, getting the Christmas tree right after Thanksgiving is a non-negotiable tradition! We also do a gingerbread house competition every year. My mom finds it hilarious that, despite being essentially an arts-and-crafts professional, I cannot manage to make a stable or attractive house.
What styles are you most excited to wear this holiday?
The Carter pants are my favorite. They are so comfortable and can be dressed up or dressed down—I love them! I also really love the Domino jeans paired with the Alyce brushed cashmere sweater.
